Dictionary meaning of Optimization is “The procedures used to make a system or design as effective and functional as possible.” Search Engine Optimization (SEO) refers to the tasks that are carried in order to maintain quality ranking and indexation of the websites being visited through various major search engines. It includes studying of various sites (competitors), collecting the relevant information (content and keywords) and then organizing them depending upon requirement of your future visitors. Broadly speaking, a web site which ranks higher, better search engine result page (SERP), will be visited by more people. Thus the work of providing the site with search engine optimized content or the site which fulfils the requirements of a visitors search engine behaviour will be more successful than less optimized websites.
Search Engine Optimization dates back to 1990s when search engines started ruling the web. Earlier web masters or content providers had to give their URLs to various search engines where spiders sent by those engines would crawl the websites and after extracting the content they would index it based on the search engine algorithm. However, its importance was realized in about 1997 when site owners recognized the value of ranking on a search engine. According to David Sullivan, a leading analyst in optimization industry, phrase Search Engine Optimisation came into existence in 1997.
Optimizing Techniques are broadly classified into two categories, white hat SEO and black hat SEO. White hat SEO techniques are those kinds of techniques which are recommended and approved by search engines and last a longer time. However, black hat SEO techniques are not recommended and disapproved by search engines as they influence rankings in a wrong way. Once discovered by the search engines these sites normally are either banned or removed from the index. BMW Germany and Ricoh Germany faced consequences of Black hat SEO techniques and were removed from Google when discovered in February 2006. However, the matter was sorted out on their apology, and they were restored. However, Yahoo! and Google, the leading search engines never disclosed the SEO techniques approved by them. Search engines want content managers and webmaster to make websites for their visitors instead of for search engines. Nevertheless there are some best practices and techniques which are proven.
In future posts I will focus more in dept in various white hat SEO techniques and advantages of SEO from my own experiences.
